The work of Joan Cabrer (Palma, 1983) converges with the heterogeneity that characterises the current contemporary painting production. Departing from consolidated technical and formal pictorial resources, Cabrer develops an artistic practice that incorporates visual and theoretical elements that point to the digital realm. The synthetic, the plasticity and the colour saturation the artist makes use of as well as his reference to the computer glitch take us instantaneously to the aesthetics associated with the digital universe. Here we see how through abstraction Joan Cabrer negotiates artistically the accelerated convergence between reality and the virtual world. In this sense, it is no coincidence that Joan Cabrer is also interested in the public space and that through his murals can take this hybridisation further to the concrete real world of architecture and urbanism. Although his chromatic palette irremediably takes us to the domain of the advanced technology, it is also true that the fluidity that comes from his brushstrokes points to a connivence with the organic world. There is more, the ethereal and the inmaterial qualities embebed in his work clashes with the materiality of painting itself that, with its own textures and imperfections, grounds the viewer in the physicality of the present. In this way Joan Cabrer’s work gravites between opposed notions by which precisely makes us reflect on the ever complex reality that we are living in where the distinction between the real and the digital is being eroded. On a formal level we see how his works follow a constant that is simultaneously opened to infinite formulations; that is, on the one hand the backgrounds that equip the work with structure and depth, and on the other, his free and vital brushstrokes give way to a great deal of dynamism. Furthermore, the use of flat and geometric motifs, very recurrent in past series, coexist and enrich this plastic universe full of possibilities and in continuous expansion.
